An Alternative Approach to Education
Offering classes from grade 1 through 7, we teach in smaller, and occasionally mixed age group classes. We follow the Cambridge International Education curriculum, with extensions inside and outside of the classroom.
Differences
01. Assessment
–
Lighthouse Academy places less stress on constant assessment as we believe it is better to spend more time teaching and promoting learning, rather than a constant focus on assessment. However, assessment still plays a vital role in the Cambridge education system.
Exams are only written in Grade 6 and 7 in the middle and the end of the year. While the children are assisted with preparations for exams, those who wish to do so may take their textbooks home to prepare further, as exams are textbook based.
02. Technology
–
Technology, in the form of iPads, is used in all parts of the school and with Apple TV provide a seamless integration of both teacher and pupil interaction, presentation, collaboration, creation and learning. In the Foundation Phase classes,In the Foundation Phase classes, laptops and iPads are used on a shared basis and programmes like Mathletics and Reading Eggs are used. In the Intermediate and Senior grades, iPads are are used on a 1:1 basis, where children have their own iPad, provided by the school, for the whole year.
03.Homework
–
We encourage our children to become focused, independent learners and so we do not give homework. The exception to this is reading in the Foundation Phase, as reading at home promotes this skill and plays a big role in the acquisition of literacy. The intermediate phase has a Prep period, normally at the end of the day, and all extra work and projects are completed at school.
04. Uniforms
–
Our children are encouraged to be individuals and do not wear uniforms. Practical and modest clothing is all that is required, along with a hat throughout the year. A policy of ‘No hat, no play’ is implemented for break times, regardless of the weather.
